Ibrahim Muhawi's translation beautifully renders Darwish's testament to the heroism of a people under siege, and to Palestinian creativity and continuity. ![]() ![]() What is the meaning of exile? What is the role of the writer in time of war? What is the relationship of writing (memory) to history (forgetfulness)? In raising these questions, Darwish implicitly connects writing, homeland, meaning, and resistance in an ironic, condensed work that combines wit with rage. Darwish’s Memory for Forgetfulness originally in Arabic, appeared in 1986, under the title The Time. It is also a journey into personal and collective memory. For over decades, Mahmoud Darwish has been the most prominent Palestinian poet. Memory for Forgetfulness is an extended reflection on the invasion and its political and historical dimensions. As fighter jets scream overhead, he explores the war-ravaged streets of Beirut on August 6th (Hiroshima Day). Memory for Forgetfulness: August, Beirut, 1982, p.33, Univ of California Press. He never implies (like her father does) that she is doing anything wrong or that she is “broken” in any way. At one point, he shares a couple of YouTube videos (the links worked when I checked) to a variety of different “Chopsticks” performances. From the beginning, Frank does not see her inability to play other music a problem. While it is left to the reader to decide whether her inability is due to mental illness, grief (dead mother alert!), rebellion against her very controlling father, or from having to “perform” almost her entire life and never getting to just be herself, her attraction to Frank is life-altering. Glory, an extraordinary pianist, has in the past few years suffered from the inability to perform any composition other than “Chopsticks.” Every time she sits down to play, the only music she can perform is Chopsticks. ![]() ![]() The story opens with the “breaking news” of missing musician Glory Fleming. ![]() In alternating viewpoints, the romance between a genius musician and her next-door neighbor – an average student with an incredible gift for drawing – unfolds. The book opens with Marisa and Jake taking in a lodger, Kate. What ensues is a story of desire, obsession, motherhood and a tangled web of relationships. Her voice was perfect for the lead characters Marisa, Kate and Jake. Yep, this was an audiobook listen and the narrator, Tanya Reynolds, was fantastic. But that alone is enticing, no? A brilliant audiobook choice This is actually a tricky review to write as I realise that if I tell you too much about the plot of Magpie, the delicious twist will be given away and I don’t want to do that. Look at it! And yes, the title is highly reflective of the crux of this story. Kicking this review off with a shout out to the fantastic cover art for Magpie. ![]() ![]() When we first meet Anne, she is a tiny, thin, pale orphan with bright red hair in braids. From the first moment she appears, Anne is a delightful companion for the imagination of any child, or any adult who still has one. In its first hundred years of existence, it has become firmly established as a classic of children’s literature. One of them, Mary Midgely, explained that it was only possible because the men were off at war, their absence making it “a great deal easier for a woman to be heard in discussion … Sheer loudness of voice has a lot to do with the difficulty, but there is also a temperamental difference about confidence – about the amount of work that one thinks is needed to make one’s opinion worth hearing.” Each would become a renowned philosopher, making their way in an academic world unwelcoming to women. Four brilliant Oxford undergraduate women were able to flourish in the early 1940s. Benjamin Lipscomb’s The Women Are Up to Something: How Elizabeth Anscombe, Philippa Foot, Mary Midgley and Iris Murdoch Revolutionized Ethics is a welcome corrective to that male-dominant narrative.
